2008 MAEC Awards

The Massachusetts Arts Education Collaborative honors arts advocates across the state in its 22nd annual awards ceremony at Lesley University on May 29, 2008 from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.

Award winners are as follows.

The Legislative Leadership Award is presented to State Senator Mark C. Montigny.

Klare Shaw, The Barr Foundation, is receiving the Irene Buck Service to Arts Education Award.

The Distinguished Arts Educator Award is awarded to James Harrison Barrett, Music Educator, Franklin Public Schools.

Southeastern Massachusetts Arts Collaborative (SMARTS) is awarded the Outstanding Community Arts Collaborative Award.

WGBH and Jonathan Abbott, President & CEO, is receiving the Media Support of Arts Education Award.

The Danforth Museum in Framingham is receiving the Outstanding Cultural Institution Award.

Judy Wilchynski of Westborough is receiving the Outstanding Parent Advocate Award.

Angeiris Encarnacion of Ritmo en Accion/Hyde Square Task Force, Jamaica Plain, is receiving the Outstanding Student Leader Award, sponsored by the Hunt Alternatives Fund.

The awards ceremony will take place during the Massachusetts Arts Education Partnership Institute: Making a Case for Arts Education. The National Arts & Learning Collaborative (NALC) is convening the 2nd annual institute in partnership with Lesley University, Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC), and VSA arts of Massachusetts. Funding partners include Hunt Alternatives Fund and MCC.

The Massachusetts Arts Education Collaborative Awards honor individuals and organizations that have made exceptional contributions to arts education and continue to make strides towards the goal of high quality arts education for every child in Massachusetts. Since 1984, MAEC, formerly the Massachusetts Alliance for Arts Education, has honored over 200 arts educators, organizations, and advocates for their contributions of artistic and educational leadership in our schools and communities.

MAEC is a statewide arts education advocacy group of NALC, which is dedicated to promoting high quality arts education for all K to 12 students. Partnering with the National Arts & Learning Collaborative of Natick, MAEC educates about, advocates for, and supports the importance of lifelong learning in and through the arts by building an alliance and creating a network among individuals, organizations, and institutions. Through the advocacy work of MAEC, NALC is a member of the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network.
